Reps. Mace, Khanna and Connolly on Passage of The Quantum Cybersecurity Preparedness Act

The Quantum Cybersecurity Preparedness Act from Rep. Nancy Mace (right), Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) and Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) on Wednesday passed out of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee by unanimous vote. By prompting the Federal government to begin taking the necessary steps today to prevent bad actors from stealing valuable information in the age of quantum computing, this important legislation helps future proof current sensitive information databases.

Rep. Mace released the following statement about the legislation:

“I’m optimistic about the power of quantum computing as part of the new technological frontier, but we must take preemptive steps to ensure bad actors aren’t able to use this technology in more sinister ways. The Quantum Cybersecurity Preparedness Act is a crucial step forward in defending our vulnerable citizens from future cyber security threats. It’s encouraging to see our colleagues recognize the importance of this legislation and I look forward to voting on it in the full house. Bipartisan legislation is crucial for our future and I want to thank Rep. Khanna and Connolly for their work on this issue,” said Rep. Mace.

Rep. Khanna also shared his thoughts on the legislation:

“A world where all of our encrypted data is exposed would have catastrophic implications for our national security and economy. I am thrilled that my legislation with Reps. Connolly and Mace was passed unanimously out of the House Oversight Committee. This is a good step to protect our data and keep critical government systems safe,” said Rep. Khanna.

Rep. Connolly added:

“We need to be forward-thinking and act decisively to protect our data,” said Rep. Connolly. ”The heart of the bill would initiate a plan to prioritize the migration to post-quantum cryptography and do an assessment of federal government’s critical systems. Current federal government systems and data sets do not have post-quantum protections, leaving much federal data vulnerable to theft. I’m proud to join my colleagues Reps. Khanna and Mace to make that happen.”

The bill is endorsed by Google, IBM, PQSecure Technologies, QuSecure, Maybell Quantum, and Quantinuum. The full text can be found here.
