Charleston Modern Collective to Present Dance Performance “Afterlife”
The Charleston Modern Collective, the modern dance performance company of the downtown Charleston nonprofit dance studio Dancefx, is presenting a dance performance at Tradesman Brewing Company on Saturday, May 28th at 5:30 pm titled Afterlife; Moving Meditations on a Global Pandemic. The performance is free to attend and there will be food trucks on site.
The performance will feature pieces the company has been working on collectively for the past year with a central focus on processing issues that the pandemic has brought to light on a personal and global level. The show will culminate with the Charleston Modern Collective’s newest collaborative piece and namesake for the production, Afterlife, which is an examination of something, someone, or a moment ceasing to exist.
The Charleston Modern Collective is an emerging arts project which began in January of 2021. The Charleston Modern Collective is a collaborative modern dance company run out of Dancefx Charleston, a non-profit downtown studio. The purpose of the dance company is to create an open space in which dancers at any level can come together to learn, teach, and create using the medium of modern dance.
All of the pieces the company creates are collaborative on some level, whether they be collectively choreographed in their entirety or have merely been influenced by the ideas and critiques of the company members. The Charleston Modern Collective dancers have trained in and draw inspiration from a variety of styles, including Graham, Horton, Taylor, and Limon. The company has performed at the Queen Street Theater, the Charleston Children’s Day Festival, the Coastal Carolina Fair, the Untapped Arts Fest, and the Pearl Theater. The company consists of members Jessie Natusch, Emmy Sheahan, and Hannah Gray.
