Spoleto Reveals its 2022 Poster Featuring Work by Christopher Myers
Spoleto Festival USA General Director Mena Mark Hanna on Monday revealed the Festival’s 2022 poster design (right), featuring a work of stained glass by acclaimed artist and writer Christopher Myers.
The poster is now available for purchase ($40) at spoletousa.org or by calling 843-579-3100. Beginning May 27th, posters will be available at Spoleto’s in-person box office kiosk at the Charleston Gaillard Center, Monday through Sunday 11 am to 5 pm.
Based in Brooklyn, New York, Myers is an accomplished fine artist who has lectured and exhibited internationally. He is also widely known for his work in literature for young people. He has received a Caldecott Honor and the Coretta Scott King Award. During Spoleto’s 2022 season, Myers serves as the visual production designer of the world premiere opera Omar.
“Stained glass is like opera – a grand, old form associated with Europe that tells breathtaking stories of gods, love, war, and death, and asks big questions about the world around us,” said Myers. “And like opera, stained glass has other roots, global histories, echoes of 8th-century Iraqi alchemists, and glassware from ancient Egyptian tombs in flashes of crimson and blue. When Spoleto invited me to think of an image that could hold some of the breadth, experimentation, and richness of the Festival, I was thrilled to think in stained glass—a traditional form that holds all the stories of the world.”
Spoleto Festival USA’s season posters have featured works by such artists as David Hockney, Charles Gaines, Jonathan Green, Maya Lin, Chuck Close, Elizabeth Murray, Sol Le Witt, Jasper Johns, JoAnn Verburg, and Christian Thee, among others. A gallery of past posters for sale can be found at spoletousa.org. Spoleto Festival USA posters are limited editions and not reprinted.
