Is Colleen Hoover’s Verity Worth Reading?

The best part of Colleen Hoover’s Verity is that you don’t know if Verity is the villain in the story or just a mere victim by the end of the book.

In my opinion, this sense of not getting the logical answer even when the book ends is what makes this book so successful.

Plot Summary

Dark & Enthralling: these are the two adjectives that best describe the plot of Colleen Hoover’s Verity.

The book is about a struggling writer named Lowen Ashleigh. On her way to meet a publisher at her agent’s office, she comes across a man and exchanges a few chats.

Reaching the office, she finds out that the man she met a few minutes before is Jeremy Crawford.

He is the husband of the bestselling author: Verity, and wants Lowen to finish her wife’s successful book series because Verity is badly injured in an accident and cannot write any longer.

Lowen accepts the offer and reaches Verity’s mansion to collect her manuscripts of the previous books and notes on the subsequent books’ plots. 

In her search for the documents to get her started on the series, she finds something even more interesting!

It’s Verity’s unfinished autobiography that she never meant for anyone to read.

As Lowen keeps on reading the autobiography, she finds out Verity’s true nature. She finds out how both their daughters died in accidents and how Verity was responsible for most of it. 

Even after learning the truth, she doesn’t disclose anything to Jeremy.

But, the empty house and Verity’s confessions strengthen Lowen’s feelings toward Jeremy; she reveals his wife’s truth to him. What Jeremy does afterward is unimaginable but what Lowen finds after all this is over makes her question her whole life.

Is It Romantic?

When I started reading Verity, I thought it would come out as a romantic thriller. But, by the end, I got more than I bargained for.

Colleen Hoover does a great job building a story with such intricacy, and not once in your reading span you’ll feel bored or stretched.

The characters are unnerving, especially Verity. 

How her autobiography starts and Lowen gets to know her feelings towards her husband and her children can make everything quite unsettling.

I haven’t read any of Colleen Hoover’s other novels, so I am no expert at how she characterizes her romantic relationship plots. But, Jeremy and Lowen’s relationship is underdeveloped.

It’s nothing more than an infatuation, and it should have been developed more before the duo decided to act together to get rid of Verity and stay together. 

Not once in the whole book I was rooting for them to be together. So, the romance aspect is genuinely missing from the book.

Now talking about Jeremy and Verity’s relationship, there’s not much to understand about their equation because only Verity’s autobiography speaks of how they were with each other.

If that’s the only source on which we can rely, I think romance is missing there too. You can only judge their intimacy from the descriptive sexual depictions Lowen reads of the couple, which Verity claims to be false by the end of the book.

So, as you can see, the romance part is not that good here.

Is It A Good Thriller?

If we only judge the book on a thriller novel’s ground, it is pretty amazing.

Throughout the book, you’ll feel like someone is watching Lowen or Verity is going to confront her in her room at any moment. Sometimes, I also felt that Lowen might plunge a knife into Verity’s chest, but Verity would ultimately save herself and place doubts about Lowen in her husband’s mind.

You’ll start questioning everything as Lowens reads page after page into Verity’s journal. The eerie ambiance is set throughout the book, making it pretty successful as a thriller novel.

So, What’s Our Take?

If you ask me, I think Verity is worth reading. 

I loved the novel, especially because I didn’t get bored once reading it, and that’s a pretty good criterion of an author to keep the readers hooked. Colleen Hoover has done a great job there, which is why I think it indeed deserved to be the NY Times BestSeller.

Even though the book was released in 2018, its popularity has not faded. 

More and more new readers are reading this book every day, so I think you should also pick up a copy and give it a chance.
