Press Release

Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum’s Teacher Recertification Conference is back for its 10th year. On June 8th and 9th, nearly 100 teachers from across 25 different South Carolina school districts will attend workshops aboard the USS Yorktown focused on English Language Arts (ELA), social studies, science, technology, and math. The teachers will learn about valuable community resources and hands-on teaching tools they can bring back to their classrooms.

This year’s keynote speaker is Damon Fordham, adjunct professor of World Civilizations and African American History at Charleston Southern University and The Citadel. Fordham will speak about the value of storytelling. The luncheon speaker will be Rep. Raye Felder. She represents South Carolina’s 26th district and serves as the House K-12 Education Committee chair.

In addition to professional development, teachers will experience life aboard an aircraft carrier and spend the night aboard the USS Yorktown.
