Handy & Hot to Sell Rodney Scott BBQ Hand Pie
Handy & Hot (68 Wentworth St.), the grab-and-go bakery and American-style coffee shop from chef and PBS personality Vivian Howard, will sell a barbecue and coleslaw hand pie developed with James Beard award-winning pitmaster Rodney Scott (right).
The Rodney Scott BBQ hand pie is part of a series of special hand pies created in collaboration with some of Charleston’s finest chefs.
“Rodney’s hand pie really hit home for me,” Vivian Howard said. “It tastes like an eastern North Carolina barbecue sandwich. I loved working with Rodney and his team on this hand pie. Rodney Scott’s Whole Hog BBQ is one of my go-tos when I’m in town. His smoked wings are one of my favorite things to snack on.”
Starting June 13th, Handy & Hot guests can enjoy a hand pie filled with sweet coleslaw and smoked pork made with Rodney Scott BBQ rub and sauce; the outside crust is dusted with pork rind crumbs. The hand pie will be available for $6 each until August 31st.
“Breakfast, lunch, dinner or dessert – pies and pork are a perfect combination,” said Rodney Scott of Rodney Scott BBQ. “Vivian and I have been friends for a long time and it’s been great to have her in Charleston. This is a fun collaboration and I’m grateful that they chose to highlight Rodney Scott’s BBQ flavors.”
Started last year, the collaboration has featured hand pies from various Charleston chefs, including Shuai Wang of Jackrabbit Filly, Juan Cassalet of Malagon, Jill Mathias of Chez Nous and Jacques Larson of The Obstinate Daughter and Wild Olive. In the fall, the collaboration will continue with Gullah Geechee foodways expert and chef BJ Dennis.
