Crews Respond to Fire in Charleston International Airport Parking Garage
Multiple local fire departments this morning responded to a vehicle fire in the parking garage at the Charleston International Airport.
According to a spokesperson from the North Charleston Fire Department (NCFD), the Charleston County Consolidated 9-1-1 Center received a 9-1-1 call at 11:13 am reporting a vehicle on fire on the second floor of the new airport parking garage. The Charleston and St. Andrews Fire Departments joined North Charleston in responding to the incident. The Charleston County Volunteer Rescue Squad and Charleston County EMS also assisted.
The NCFD said that while crews were setting up operations, a second vehicle caught fire. Both vehicles were eventually extinguished and crews set up ventilation to clear the smoke from the garage. Multiple vehicles were damaged by heat around the burning vehicles.
One firefighter sustained a minor injury and was transported by Charleston County EMS. No other injuries have been reported.
A fire investigation has determined that a vehicle drove into the parking garage and the driver smelled something burning. When the driver stopped the vehicle on the second level of the parking garage, the engine compartment ignited. As of publishing, the parking garage structure is still being assessed to determine if there is any damage.
