Colbie Caillat Delights at Riviera Theater

Pop Music Songstress Revisits 2007 Debut Album ‘Coco’ On Recent Tour

15 years into a flawless and fluid career pop music sensation Colbie Caillat is still a rare gem in the entertainment industry. Friday (June 17th) night before an intimate crowd of 550 people at the newly remodeled Riviera Theater she revisited songs from her 2007 debut album ‘Coco’, much to the delight of fans of all ages including a few who no doubt were born after its release.

Clad in a shimmering white dress with her sun-kissed skin and golden hair, Caillat danced on stage like a butterfly, using her angelic voice to pipe out an array of hits that first introduced her to the mainstream. With a capable five piece band behind her Caillat commanded the stage for 90 minutes offering up poignant back stories behind her songwriting prowess.

Delightful and comfortable on stage, Caillat’s tour stop in Charleston felt similar to a family member returning home as she easily engaged those in attendance. ‘Magic’ was a tender moment with just Caillat accompanied solely by a long-time band member on piano.

How she arrived at the song title ‘Capri’ was equally moving and rather amusing, recalling a close friend who was 19 at the time and newly pregnant. She said the expectant mother was weighing baby names between Caprice and Capri. While Caillat decided ‘Capri’ fit better for her song, her friend opted for Caprice after the child was born.

Top 20 success with ‘Realize’ and ‘Bubbly’ had many in the crowd singing in unison on familiar choruses. While a majority of the show focused on Caillat’s debut release she did include ‘Lucky’ her 2009 duet with Jason Mraz and ‘Never Gonna Let You Down’ from 2014’s ‘Gypsy Heart’. Both were well received.

Charleston concert goers were appreciative Caillat found time earlier in the day to soak up some of the sights in the Holy City. On just the second night on the ‘Coco’ tour Caillat admitted it’s nice to be back out on the road and hoped things are returning to normal.

24-year-old Nashville hopeful Nick Davisson opened the show, sending out a half dozen introspective songs including his debut release ‘Wild West’ which recently arrived in various streaming formats. Although most in the crowd were new to his music, the West Virginia native who resides in Music City had little trouble getting the crowd to join in on John Denver’s ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads, a nice salute to the ‘mountain state’.

Colbie Caillat is among a select high profile artists who have graced the stage at renovated Riviera Theater since it re-opened a few months back. With her blend of pop, adult contemporary, and country music she and the others that have performed before her are an ideal mix for the intimate theatre venue setting.
