DREAM Team & Flowertown Host Epic Party Capped Off with Beatles Tribute

Jeff Walker, Entertainment Writer

Who knew 95 years to the day after the Town of Summerville was incorporated that Sir Paul McCartney would be born in Liverpool England? On Saturday (June 18th) Summerville and one fourth of The Beatles celebrated their 175th and 80th birthdays respectively, as Flowertown hosted an afternoon full of festivities commemorating both historical occasions.

Sponsored by the town and Summerville Dream the family friendly event was ripe with live entertainment, food trucks, and outdoor vendor market, with several adjacent businesses along West Richardson, Short Central, and Main Street providing extended shopping and dining opportunities.

With West Richardson closed for traffic from Main to Central Avenue an entire city block transformed into a giant party atmosphere. Featuring three stages, two of which local bands performed continually from 2-6pm in Hutchinson Square, and one giant stage on Richardson that provided a nice open-air venue for the night’s main attraction, Summerville Dream spared no expense for both birthday bashes.

At 7pm as the sun was beginning to set behind the town’s landscape BritBeat the premier Beatles tribute band took to the main stage taking roughly 1000 in attendance back to 1964. BritBeat’s production was twofold covering The Beatles early years from their appearance on Ed Sullivan filled with simple love songs such as ‘She Loves You’ and ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’.

Before exiting for a 15 minute intermission they got the entire crowd on their feet to shake to ‘Twist & Shout’. When the boys returned they revisited the more psychedelic era of The Beatles offering timeless songs like ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ ‘Yellow Submarine’, and ‘Sgt. Pepper’. BritBeat know how to work the crowd and entertain using humorous banter.

All in all everyone who came out join in the double birthday celebrations had a jam up good time. Kudos to the Town of Summerville, the Summerville Police Department and Summerville Dream Executive Director Steve Doniger along with his staff for allowing young and old to ‘Come Together’ and experience ‘A Day in the Life’ of Flowertown USA and The Beatles!

McCartney politely declined an invitation to the festival but sent his regards! No doubt the birthday journeys for both the town and Sir Paul have been a ‘Long and Winding Road’ but spending Saturday afternoon under clear blue skies in downtown Summerville is better than being ‘Back in the U.S.S.R.’. All song title puns intended! Happy Birthday Summerville and many more!
