CofC Program Makes it Easier for Students to Transfer from S.C. Technical Colleges
The bridge from a two-year degree to a four-year degree is now easier to cross.
A recent state legislative proviso now guarantees that those who complete an associate of arts (A.A.) or associate of science (A.S.) degree at a public South Carolina technical college can transfer a minimum of 60 credit hours and junior class status to a public four-year school. This means students will have an easier path to finishing a four-year degree.
The College of Charleston’s Bachelor of Professional Studies (B.P.S.) program has decided to take that one step further. Known for being a flexible and practical online degree for adult learners, the B.P.S. program is now waiving admission prerequisites for graduates of South Carolina’s 16 public, two-year technical colleges.
“This proviso will allow us to work with our technical college partners across the state to streamline the path to a bachelor’s degree and further enhance the development of our workforce within the state of South Carolina,” says Michelle Futrell, assistant dean for professional studies and continuing education at the College of Charleston.
Research shows that one major roadblock for former students looking to earn their bachelor’s degree is the loss of academic credits that sometimes occurs when transferring to another institution.
“The support of the College’s administration and faculty in implementing this proviso allows the B.P.S. program to remove barriers that previously would have made degree completion a much lengthier and costlier process,” adds Futrell.
The College’s B.P.S. degree is designed for working professionals. The program, which is completely online, enables adult learners to earn a quality liberal arts degree of the same rigor from CofC’s School of Business, boosting their job prospects and career advancement opportunities. B.P.S. students also have access to personalized academic advising, career development, mentoring and individualized professional coaching.
The program offers four in-demand concentrations in applied communication, healthcare and medical services management, organizational management and development, and project management. The program also offers multiple application deadlines for adult learners to begin their coursework to complete their bachelor’s degree when the time is right.
