WREN Statement on Supreme Court Decision on Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health Organization
WREN, the Women’s Rights and Empowerment Network, today released the following statement regarding the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health, which effectively overturns Roe v. Wade:
“WREN denounces the decision issued June 24, 2022 by the United States Supreme Court on the Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case, upholding the abortion ban in Mississippi and striking down Roe v Wade.
It is imperative that South Carolinians speak up loudly and boldly in support of abortion rights in our state right now.
According to Ann Warner, CEO of WREN, ‘The Supreme Court’s decision has put our health, our lives, and our freedoms in jeopardy, but we will not back down. Not now, and not ever. Our movement is strong and growing, and we demand that South Carolina lawmakers respect our rights to control our own bodies and determine our own futures. If they fail to do so, these lawmakers will be directly responsible for the loss of health, life, bodily autonomy, safety, and economic security of countless South Carolinians.’
Abortion is still legal in South Carolina today, but that right is in immediate jeopardy. Legislative leaders and Governor McMaster have vowed to institute an outright abortion ban and have already set the wheels in motion to do so as soon as possible by reconvening the General Assembly.
No matter what happens in the Supreme Court or in the Statehouse, WREN and its network of partners will ensure that all people are connected to safe and legal reproductive healthcare services, and we will advocate for policies that will keep us healthy, safe, and free. We are in this for the long haul. You can find more information to access these resources at scwren.org.”
