Declaration of Independence to be Read at the Old Exchange on July 4th
On Monday, July 4th, Mayor John Tecklenburg and representatives from the Old Exchange and the Washington Light Infantry will take part in a reading of the Declaration of Independence at 9 am. The reading will be held at the Old Exchange Building at 122 East Bay Street.
After a presentation by local historian Dr. Nic Butler of the Charleston County Library, the following individuals will read the Declaration of Independence:
- Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg
- Former Charleston Mayor Joseph Riley, Jr.
- Lieutenant General Colby M. Broadwater, III USA (ret)
- Colonel Joseph Dawson, Commandant of the Military Magnet High School
- Major General Abraham Turner, retired US Army and former Commander of USATC
- Major General Henry I. Siegling, Commander of the Washington Light Infantry
- Hon. Justice Costa Pleicones, Retired Chief Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court
- Mr. Tony Youmans, Director of the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon Building
- Ms. Abigail Youmans, daughter of Tony and Stephany Youmans
- Ms. Brittany V. Lavelle Tulla, Architectural Historian and Professor at the College of Charleston
- Mr. Grahame Long, Director of House Museums at the Historic Charleston Foundation
