Press Release

Over the weekend, Ellis Roberts, the Democratic nominee for South Carolina State House District 110, reported raising $40,277 since announcing his candidacy on March 25th of this year. Roberts reported raising $38,294.00 during the second quarter and has $36,613.10 on-hand.

House District 110 is currently held by Republican William Cogswell who is not running for re-election. The newly redrawn district is now considered by many to be the most competitive between the two parties in the state. It encompasses Mount Pleasant south of 526 to the bridge, Downtown south of Calhoun Street, areas of James Island near the harbor, and the Crescent subdivision in West Ashley.

Roberts’s Republican opponent, Tom Hartnett Jr., reported raising $2,400 for the second quarter and $6,045 for the campaign. Hartnett, who has made increasing abortion restrictions a center point of his candidacy, reports having only $4,758.10 on-hand. Hartnett unsuccessfully ran for Charleston Register of Deeds in 2018.

Roberts says his campaign is continuing to build momentum daily.

“Everyday I hear the same message from voters in the district.” he said. “They are tired of politicians who cater to the extremes of their political parties. They are ready to elect common sense candidates who will work with both sides to get things done and that is what this campaign is about. They’ve had it with all the crazy legislation and grandstanding that only divides and embarrasses us.”

Roberts, who is making his first run for political office, pledges to run a grassroots campaign that will prioritize in person, face to face interaction with district voters and common-sense leadership.

Roberts, a 2001 graduate of the College of Charleston, lives in Mount Pleasant with his wife, Mary, and their four young boys, James, Bert, Jack, and Bo along with their dog, Birdie.  Ellis is an attorney and owns a law practice in downtown Charleston where he has been practicing for ten years.
