City of Charleston Unveils Charleston Work House Storyboard

The City of Charleston today unveiled a storyboard outlining the history of the Charleston Work House (sometimes referred to as “The Sugar House”), which was once located on Magazine Street near Logan Street.
The storyboard tells the brutal story of the Charleston Work House, which opened in 1738 as a place to house the poor and as a public hospital. Thirty years later, after a new hospital was built for white paupers, the Work House became exclusively “a place of correction” for the enslaved.
The cruel abuses inflicted at the Work House were specifically cited at the 2018 meeting in which Charleston City Council adopted a resolution apologizing for the city’s role in regulating, supporting and fostering slavery.
