Press Release

Charleston County School Board District 8 candidate Darlene Dunmeyer-Roberson has released the following statement regarding Charleston County School District’s Board of Trustees proposal on board policy and district policy manuals:

“As a citizen and a candidate for Charleston County School District School Board District 8, this proposal and agenda item regarding the District Policy Manual and Board Policy Manual gravely concerns me. The background information for this topic, provided by the originators, is vague and appears to allow for the transferring of power and roles and responsibilities from the current School Board members to the newly appointed “temporary” Superintendent. It is essential that Charleston County School District’s governing power remain with the elected Board of Trustees. The bedrock of democracy is such that the voice of constituents, parents, and children are heard through their elected officials. This is the responsibility of our school board members to represent our interests, the interests of the community, and those that elected them. The Board governs policy and provides oversight and accountability. The Superintendent acts in the role of the manager and is both selected and accountable to the Board. This agenda item does not demonstrate governing “best practices” and the Board Chair should remove it from the agenda in totality.”

Candidate Darlene Dunmeyer-Roberson will address this during Public Comments at the upcoming Committee of the Whole Meeting on Monday, July 18, 2022.
