The Charleston Teacher Alliance (CTA) today released the results of its annual school leadership survey. This year’s survey was completed by 718 Charleston County teachers. The results provide feedback on the leadership skills of principals and the board of trustees.

Highlights:

  • The school board was rated “Ineffective” (1.80 out of 4.00)
  • 12 schools were designated as “Honor Roll Schools” for having principals who demonstrated outstanding leadership
  • 5 schools were designated “At-Risk” for overall ineffective principal performance
  • The survey identified 5 top concerns faced by CCSD teachers:
    • Compensation
    • Class size
    • Discipline
    • Teacher retention
    • Frequent and scripted curricular changes

“It was one of the more turbulent school years in recent memory, so we are pleased to report that many schools are flourishing under positive principal leadership,” said Charleston Teacher Alliance Director, Jody Stallings. “Teachers are eager to work with new superintendent Don Kennedy to help our district reach every student under our supervision. Though the board received an overall rating of ‘ineffective,’ there were moments this year where some board members sought to listen to teachers and support us through trying times. CCSD teachers are sending a strong message to the district that help is needed in five critical areas: compensation, class size, discipline, teacher retention, and frequent and scripted curricular changes. We look forward to collaborating with principals, district leaders, and the school board on ways to improve these crucial concerns.”
