Disability Pride Celebration Returns for 2nd Year
The Lowcountry’s commemoration of Disability Pride Month will this year move to Holy City Brewing in North Charleston for its second annual celebration. The festivities on Friday, July 29th will include music and live entertainment, including performances by HEART Inclusive Arts Community, the Pluff Mud String Band, Holy City Hotfoot, and more.
Guest speakers include Ashley Lawrence, South Carolina’s reigning Ms. Wheelchair South Carolina USA, and Katie Thompson, a multimedia artist and writer. The event will also boast a market of local nonprofits and disability organizations, vendors, games, arts and crafts.
Nationally celebrating its 32nd year, Disability Pride Month is held each July and is a time to celebrate the Disabled identity. It’s also a moment to recognize the many achievements and the inherent value of all individuals with Disabilities.
Despite being the largest and most diverse minority community across the globe, this event has rarely been officially recognized in communities-at-large, and Charleston has become one of the few cities in the U.S. which officially recognizes Disability Pride Month. There are still no official observances of the month at any state or national level.
Disability Pride at Holy City Brewing is free to attend and open to the public of all ages. This event is presented by HEART Inclusive Arts Community, Camp Rise Above, and Beyond Basic in partnership with disabilities organizations, nonprofits, and members of the Disability Community from all across the Lowcountry.
