Rep. Mace Co-Sponsors Legislation to Provide Over the Counter Birth Control Access
Rep. Nancy Mace (SC-01) co-sponsored Rep. Ashley Hinson’s (IA-01) Allowing Greater Access to Safe and Effective Contraception Act, which was introduced on Tuesday. This legislation will allow adult women to access over-the-counter birth control pills that have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as safe and effective.
Rep. Mace released the following statement on the legislation:
“I have always been an advocate for women’s access to safe and effective contraceptives. This legislation helps ensure women will have to over the counter birth control pills at their local pharmacies across the country. I have and will continue to support women through increased access to healthcare resources like these. As an aside, I also want to take an opportunity to thank Gov. Henry McMaster who recently signed legislation into law that allows pharmacists to prescribe birth control in South Carolina.”
Background:
Congresswoman Hinson’s Allowing Greater Access to Safe and Effective Contraception Act would enable women ages 18 and up to access FDA-approved, routine-use birth control pills over the counter. This legislation requires the FDA to give priority review to already-approved, safe oral contraceptives for routine use so that they can be available over the counter for adult women. Additionally, this legislation expands options for women to use tax-advantaged health accounts to pay for their over-the-counter birth control.
