On Sunday, August 7th, the Secular Humanists of the Lowcountry will host a free event with Dr. Herb Silverman, author of Candidate Without a Prayer: An Autobiography of a Jewish Atheist in the Bible Belt. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held at Gage Hall starting at 4 pm.

Silverman will discuss his journey from being a Orthodox Jew growing up in Philadelphia, to apathetic atheist, to accidental activist atheist when he moved to South Carolina. He will also talk about his encounters with Billy Graham, Jimmy Carter, and others when he ran for Governor of South Carolina.

Silverman is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at the College of Charleston, founder of the Secular Coalition for America, founder of the Secular Humanists of the Lowcountry, founder of the Atheist/Humanist Alliance student group at the College of Charleston, and a recipient of the American Humanist Association Lifetime Achievement Award. He has written for the for the Washington Post, Huffington Post, The Humanist, Free Inquiry, Humanistic Judaism, and other magazines and blogs.

After learning that atheists were ineligible to hold public office in South Carolina, Silverman waged an eight-year battle that ended with an unanimous decision by the South Carolina Supreme Court that struck down this requirement.
