Four Dead Dogs Found in West Ashley Home
Ten Bulldogs were found at a West Ashley home on Tuesday in dangerous conditions by the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office. Six of the dogs were brought to Charleston Animal Society, one in critical condition.
The majority of the dogs, including the deceased ones, were infected with Parvo, a highly contagious, yet preventable disease. Parvo attacks a dog’s intestines, causing severe diarrhea and life-threatening conditions if not treated. It’s recommended that all dogs be fully vaccinated against Parvo, ideally as puppies.
The dogs brought to Charleston Animal Society were quarantined and are receiving lifesaving treatment by a team of expert veterinarians. “This comes at a time when our shelter is packed beyond capacity, but we are not going to stand by and let these dogs suffer,” said Charleston Animal Society Vice President of Operations and Strategy Alwin Roman, CAWA. “Our mission has always been to prevent cruelty to animals, but when cruelty does happen we will provide lifesaving care and seek justice for these voiceless victims.”
Anyone who may have had contact with these dogs, found on Orleans Road in West Ashley, should monitor their dogs for signs of Parvo and consider taking their dogs to their veterinarian if concerned. Parvo can live for long periods in an environment, once an outbreak occurs.
