Pet Helpers Opens its Doors to Rescued Beagles as They Arrive in Charleston

Pet Helpers says they have received 18 beagles from a group removed from a mass-breeding facility filled with animal welfare concerns. The Humane Society of the United States is coordinating the removal of approximately 4,000 beagles housed at a facility in Virginia which bred dogs to be sold to laboratories for animal experimentation.

Pet Helpers staff members drove to Virginia, picked up the 18 beagle puppies for transfer, and returned to Charleston late Friday evening (8/5/2022). The puppies received a medical assessment, were microchipped, and provided with the necessary vaccinations and preventative treatments for their individual wellness plans, as well as a much needed bath. The puppies will continue to be evaluated and vetted for any illness or behavioral issues before they go to temporary foster homes this week.

“This rescue is a massive undertaking for the multiple organizations taking on this endeavor,” said Executive Director, Melissa Susko. “Animal shelter admissions in Charleston are at an all time high this summer and our resources are stretched beyond capacity. While we continue to focus on the care of the animals within our community, we knew we needed to do our part and join in to help these beagles, too. Seeing the look of happiness on these puppies’ faces as they get to experience their first taste of freedom, knowing they are bound for a loving home within our community, is one of the rewarding joys we get to experience at Pet Helpers.”

It will be a few weeks before these beagle puppies will become available for adoption to residents in the Tri-County area. An additional transfer of adult beagles is scheduled in the upcoming weeks. In the meantime, Pet Helpers is accepting donations to help with the care of these animals. Donations can be made by visiting the Pet Helpers website, www.pethelpers.org.
