Beagle-mania Sweeps Charleston! Pet Helpers Announces Adoption Event For Rescued Dogs

Pet Helpers will be hosting an adoption event on Saturday, August 20, 2022 for the 18 beagles transferred to its facility as part of the group removed from a mass-breeding facility in Virginia, riddled with animal welfare concerns. The Humane Society of the United States coordinated the removal and transfer of approximately 4,000 beagles from this facility, which bred dogs to be sold to laboratories for animal experimentation. 

The adoption event will be held from 10 am to 12pm at the Pet Helpers Adoption Center located at 1447 Folly Road on James Island.  Here’s what the facility had to say about the event:

Anticipation of adoption for these 18 beagle puppies has reached a state of fanatical levels. In an effort to provide a fair and equitable adoption process, the adoption event will be on a first come, first serve basis. Staff members will distribute numbers beginning at 8 am to interested adopters. Deposits, waitlists and/or reserved holds will not be accepted. To service as many interested parties as possible, Pet Helpers will limit one puppy adoption per household. Interested applicants must complete an application for adoption and meet with an adoption counselor prior to adoption. Adoption fees are $350 per puppy. All puppies have been microchipped, neutered and have received all applicable vaccinations and preventative health treatments for their age.

“We anticipated that these beagle puppies would capture the hearts of animal lovers within our community, but we did not expect the outpouring of interest to reach to this level,” Executive Director Melissa Susko said. “We have received hundreds of phone calls, emails and messages on social media inquiring about adopting these puppies. We are fielding inquiries from California to Florida, in the hopes of adopting one of the beagles. Our goal is to find 18 loving homes within our local community for these animals, and we hope that this increased interest in animal adoption can lead to additional pet adoptions for the other animals, as shelters in the area are at or near capacity this summer.”

An additional transfer of adult beagles is scheduled in the next few weeks. In the meantime, Pet Helpers is accepting donations to help with the care of these animals. Donations can be made by visiting the Pet Helpers website, www.pethelpers.org.

Individuals residing out of state that are interested in adopting a rescued beagle, should visit the Humane Society of the United States’ website, www.humanesociety.org, to find animal organizations in their area that are participating in this massive animal rescue.
