Patriots Point to Blast Historic USS Yorktown’s Horn in Memory of Tragic Attack on September 11th
Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum will honor the 2,977 people who lost their lives in the September 11th terrorist attacks with multiple memorial events. In remembrance of those who ran bravely into harm’s way, Patriots Point will offer free admission to first responders on Saturday, September 10th and Sunday, September 11th. The museum will also blast the horn of the historic USS Yorktown to bring attention to significant moments from that day 21 years ago.
The horn of USS Yorktown will sound six times throughout the morning. Those horn blasts will take place at 8:46 am, 9:03am, 9:37 am, 9:59 am, 10:03 am, and 10:28 am. The horn symbolizes the times when the World Trade Center and Pentagon were attacked, the crash of Flight 93, and when each tower of the World Trade Center collapsed.
“The horn of USS Yorktown will echo throughout Patriots Point, Charleston Harbor, and downtown Charleston,” said Interim Executive Director Mac Burdette. “We hope this will make people throughout the community pause to honor the fallen and reflect on the sacrifices of firefighters and police officers.”
The museum will also provide an opportunity for visitors to share their thoughts, memories, and special messages related to September 11th, 2001 on a display near the Information Desk aboard USS Yorktown. Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum is currently open every day from 9 am until 6:30 pm.
Patriots Point will also host the Life and Legacy blood drive in partnership with the Blood Connection on Saturday, September 10th. From 11 am to 4 pm, visitors can honor the legacy of the fallen by donating blood that will save lives at Charleston-area hospitals. All donors will receive free parking in the museum lot and a complimentary day pass for the Charleston Water Taxi. Plus, a $10 charitable donation will be made to the USS Yorktown Foundation for every person who donates blood at Patriots Point. This contribution will support the preservation and restoration of museum exhibits. For more information and make an appointment to donate blood, visit patriotspoint.org.
