South Carolina Pro-Choice Advocates to Rally Against Abortion Ban
On Wednesday, September 7th, pro-choice advocates will gather at the Statehouse to rally against a proposed total abortion ban that threatens the lives, health, and economic security of pregnant people in South Carolina.
On Tuesday, the Senate Medical Affairs Committee debated H. 5399 and advanced the bill to the full Senate. The Committee voted to remove an exception for rape and incest, refused to adopt an amendment for fetal anomalies, and refused to adopt amendments to expand access to contraception and comprehensive sex education.
Tomorrow, the Senate will debate H. 5399 on the floor. This is the last stop for the bill. If it passes, Governor Henry McMaster will sign the bill into law without any delay.
Pro-abortion advocates will join the Women’s Right and Empowerment Network (WREN), Planned Parenthood, SC United for Justice & Equality and ACLU SC on Wednesday, September 7th to protest the total ban of abortion. Advocates will gather tomorrow at 9 am outside the Statehouse and pack the lobby when the Senate goes into session at 10 am.
“The South Carolina Senate must put a stop to this extreme bill that will have unimaginable consequences for the safety, health, and economic well-being of South Carolinians,” said Ann Warner, CEO of WREN. “We know that the majority of South Carolinians are deeply opposed to this radical government overreach into our private lives, and we must ensure that our state Senators hear us loud and clear before it’s too late.”
