Charleston RiverDogs outfielder Shane Sasaki has been named the Carolina League Player of the Month for August, Minor League Baseball announced on Wednesday afternoon. Sasaki is the third RiverDogs position player and fourth player overall to receive monthly recognition during the 2022 season. Dru Baker previously took home the honor in April and Willy Vasquez was Player of the Month in July. Austin Vernon was named Pitcher of the Month for May.

In 22 games during the month, Sasaki led the league in hits (31), doubles (12), total bases (62) and OPS (1.149) and was second in batting average (.356) and slugging percentage (.713). He also hit five home runs and finished the month with a .436 on-base percentage. Sasaki posted 11 multi-hit games, including the third and fourth four-hit games of his career. The 22-year-old also hit two home runs on August 20th at Augusta.

The Tampa Bay Rays drafted Sasaki with their third-round pick in the 2019 MLB draft from Iolani High School in Honolulu. He hit .182 in 2019 with the GCL Rays. When the 2020 season was canceled due to COVID-19, Sasaki spent the winter playing ball in Australia. That experience quickly paid off when he returned to the complex in 2021, posting a .290 batting average with eight extra-base hits and 22 stolen bases.

The RiverDogs continue their final series of the regular season in Columbia on Wednesday night at 7:05 pm.  They are one win away from clinching a playoff spot.
