Reps. John King and Krystle Matthews Call on House Speaker and Senate President to Appoint Only Women to Abortion Ban Conference Committee
As the South Carolina House is set to vote on the Senate’s version of a near-total ban on abortion next week, State Representatives John King (D-York) and Krystle Matthews (D-Berkeley) are calling on House Speaker Murrell Smith and Senate President Thomas Alexander to only appoint women to a potential conference committee formed for this bill.
King (below right) and Matthews (above right) released the following statement:
“This committee will have an enormous impact on the women of South Carolina and their rights. Male legislators should not be making decisions about women’s bodies. This extreme ban is deeply unpopular and does not represent the will of the people. Women in South Carolina are tired of being disrespected and disregarded when it comes to their bodies. The committee that decides what will happen to this ban should be comprised of only women.”
A conference committee on H.5399, the abortion ban, would be formed if the House and Senate cannot reach an agreement on the final version of the bill. The House will vote on the Senate’s version of the legislation next Tuesday.
