Joe Cunningham Receives South Carolina Education Association Endorsement in Governor’s Race

Democratic nominee for Governor Joe Cunningham today announced that he has accepted the endorsement of the South Carolina Education Association (The SCEA). Joined by The SCEA representatives and county leaders at a press conference in Columbia, Cunningham formally accepted the endorsement and spoke about his plan to improve South Carolina’s education system.

“It’s past time for South Carolina to have an education governor,” Cunningham said. “For too long, Governor McMaster has abandoned our schools and ignored our teachers. I will never turn my back on our teachers because you are worth everything we can give you and then some. Last spring, my campaign released a plan to end the teacher shortage by making historic investments in South Carolina’s education system, starting with raising teacher pay.”

SCEA President Sherry East said the organization was proud to recommend Cunningham for governor because of his focus on educators.

“The South Carolina Education Association is proud to recommend Joe Cunningham as South Carolina’s next governor,” East said. “Because Joe has taken the time to center educator voices and the input of The SCEA at education roundtables, we know Joe is an authentic champion of public education,” East said. “He respects and listens to educators and school staff. He knows that working conditions are learning conditions, and his plan to stop the educator shortage crisis addresses the root causes: giving educators the professional pay, working conditions, and resources they need to give all South Carolina students the education they deserve.”

Last spring, Cunningham released a plan to end the state’s teacher shortage.
