Most Underrated US States to Visit This Year

Published

on

Even the most experienced American tourists haven’t visited all the places this country has to offer. There is a large country out there, and crossing off all 50 states is a very common goal. However, some of the less “glamorous” states unavoidably go overlooked, which is unfortunate. More than ever, we fantasize about driving down the highway in pursuit of vast open areas, desert swaths, stunning beaches, breathtaking mountain panoramas, and other memorable imagery. Let’s look at some of the most underrated US states that you should visit.

Massachusetts

While there are sports to see, history to learn, and delicious food to be eaten in Boston, the boatloads of seaside communities that make startlingly under-visited Massachusetts such a jewel are what make it so unique. Take a stroll through quaint Cape Ann fishing communities like Rockport, where you can chat with lobstermen and eat incredibly fresh seafood.

The more well-known getaways, Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard provide opportunities to see seals and sharks along the National Seashore. Take the Cape Cod Central Railroad from Hyannis to Buzzards Bay for a quick trip. It’s one of the most picturesque routes in the nation, winding along the coast while passing through charming little villages and cranberry bogs.

Oregon

Oregon is home to a wide variety of habitats, from the land’s deep woods to the ethereal coast’s abundance of bizarre natural places and Goonies-approved shorelines. With its towering cliffs and dizzying waterfalls, the Columbia River Gorge is undoubtedly a place everyone should visit.

Long shadows are cast over lush valleys, raging rivers, and high-desert vistas that appear to have been painted by the gods by mountains like Hood, Bachelor, and the Three Sisters.

Michigan

The state is made up of a variety of woods, vibrant cities, stunning beaches, and a long history. In Michigan, you may go fishing and engage in a variety of water sports. The state boasts the longest freshwater coastline in the United States, with an incredible 3,288 miles of shoreline. Michigan is home to one of the most successful online gaming markets in the US. You can get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and contemporary life on Mackinac Island. The island is rated as one of Michigan’s top tourist destinations. Visitors may only navigate about the island on bicycles or horse-drawn carriages because it is car-free. Residents of the state love this island getaway, and many would tell you that visiting Mackinac Island is a must.

Alabama

Historical locations related to the Civil Rights struggle may be found all across the state, including the National Voting Rights Museum in Selma, the Civil Rights Institute, and the renowned 16th St Baptist Church in Birmingham. Baseball here has a long history as well; Rickwood Field in Birmingham is America’s first ballpark. Do you know the location of the biggest space museum in the United States? It is in Huntsville! The top tourist destination in the state is the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, which houses the legendary space camp.

Oklahoma

One of the most underappreciated weekend getaway spots in the country is Tulsa, a city founded on oil wealth that is now being populated by young people working in the medical and IT fields. Tulsa boasts its own philharmonic, ballet, and two of the top art museums in the nation at the Philbrook and Gilcrease thanks to the aforementioned oil money. Even the Brady Arts District is becoming a hipster haven.

You’ll discover a flourishing, contemporary metropolis in Oklahoma City that still celebrates its cow-town beginnings but has also become a burgeoning culinary attraction in its own right. Route 66 traverses the whole state outside of the cities, passing quirky roadside landmarks like the Blue Whale of Catoosa.
