“Know Us” Holding Second Annual Immersive Weekend Experience in Charleston
This weekend, Friday, October 7th to Sunday, October 9th, “Know Us” invites locals and visitors alike to enjoy an immersive experience through Charleston’s interwoven history, culture, traditions, and community. From dinner on a third-generation, Black-owned Farm with Netflix-Featured Gullah Chef and historian BJ Dennis, to immersive opportunities to engage with Charleston’s Black and Brown communities, the organization invites you to get to know Charleston— “deeply, authentically, and intentionally.”
“Know Us” Weekends are a component of the nonprofit program Plant, Build and Restore, Inc., which aims to “enact generational change by honoring history and harnessing the power it provides to shape our collective paths forward.”
Last year, “Know Us” held their inaugural event in Tulsa, Oklahoma. They commemorated the 100th commemoration of the 1921 Race Massacre by gathering to engage, connect, and amplify Tulsa’s Black community. This year, it’s Charleston’s turn. Over 40% of the nation’s enslaved population arrived through Charleston’s ports; this is an origin story everyone should know. “Know Us” believes it is time to learn the history, culture, and progress that’s shaped Charleston and defines it today.
