Charleston State House Candidate Accused of Ducking Interviews and Debates
Democratic nominee for South Carolina House District Ellis Roberts (right) today said his opponent, Republican Tom Hartnett, was ducking interviews and debates as the election approaches.
The campaign said Hartnett cancelled a previously scheduled interview with Quintin’s Close-ups and refused multiple dates offered by the Charleston League of Women Voters to debate his Roberts.
Today, Roberts issued the following statement:
“If elected, Tom Hartnett would be the most extreme member of the Charleston delegation. He’d be a guaranteed vote for the upstate radicals. He’s with them on every issue. Banning abortions, locking up women and their doctors for having an abortions and literally guns for everyone without meaningful safety measures.
I was looking forward to debating Mr. Hartnett to discuss his beliefs that are incredibly out of touch with Lowcountry voters. I’m disappointed he’s decided to duck forums and not answer basic questions from Quintin Washington and others. I do not understand why he would be uncomfortable talking with voters about his beliefs and allowing voters to hear where he stands on the issues.”
Ellis Roberts is a graduate of the College of Charleston, a small business owner and father of four young children. He is running for State House to bring common sense and moderation back to Columbia. He believes the government should stay out of women’s health care decisions, believes in common sense gun safety measures, and believes the Charleston area isn’t getting its fair share of state assistance and funding especially when it comes to infrastructure and road safety.”
