The Charleston Museum, founded in 1773 and considered America’s first museum, recently debuted The Charleston Museum: America’s First Museum, the official commemorative book in honor of the organization’s 250th anniversary in January 2023. The volume brings the Museum’s history to life, while offering insight into their vast collections and the contributions of many key figures who made the Museum what it is today.

“It is an incredible honor and privilege to lead this Museum, which is so much a part of our nation’s history,” said Carl Borick, Director of The Charleston Museum and principal author of, The Charleston Museum: America’s First Museum.  “It is very difficult to summarize an institution of our scope and size, but I really feel that this work accomplishes that. The publication would not have been possible without the backing of many individuals and organizations, and we are most grateful for their input.”

The special volume, The Charleston Museum: America’s First Museum, displays the Museum’s history and showcases approximately 100 of the Museum’s prized impressive collections in archaeology, natural history, archived materials, decorative arts, and historic textiles. The book also provides insight into the preservation of historic landmarks, such as the Heyward-Washington House, the Joseph Manigault House, and the Dill Sanctuary.

The Charleston Museum: America’s First Museum is available for eBook and hardcover purchase on the Museum’s website, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and other online booksellers.
