Charleston County Democratic Party Chair Calls on Republicans to Condemn State House Candidate Tied to Anti-Government Militia Movement

Charleston County Democratic Party Chair Greg Perry on Thursday called on local Republican leaders to condemn State House candidate Matt Leber (right) following reports of his ties to the Three Percenters, a right-wing militia group. You can read his statement below:

“A candidate for public office in our community has been directly involved in the right-wing domestic terrorist movement. This poses a threat to the security of our state government. I’m calling on Republicans like Congresswoman Nancy Mace and Gov. McMaster, who campaigned with Leber just last month, to condemn his actions.

Does Joe Boykin, candidate for County Council, condone Leber’s extremism? The voters on Johns Island, Wadmalaw Island, Hollywood, Ravenel, and Edisto need to know. Do Tom Hartnett, Ken Fipps, Gary Brewer, Latrecia Pond, Joe Bustos, and Kathy Landing condone Leber’s extremism? They all want to serve in the State House with him — many of them have personally campaigned with him.

Maybe they didn’t know the truth about Matt Leber, but right now their silence is deafening. This news broke on Monday, and they haven’t said a word.”

According to the Anti-Defamation League, the Three Percenters are part of a right-wing militia movement that wants to overthrow the government and said that the “Three Percenters have a track record of criminal activity ranging from weapons violations to terrorist plots and attacks.”

The Three Percenters were part of the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021 and many of their members have been prosecuted and convicted for their involvement in it.

Matt Leber is the Republican nominee for S.C. House District 116, which includes portions of Charleston and Colleton Counties.
