CofC Orchestra Presents Local Send-Off Concert before Performing at Kennedy Center
After an electrifying concert headlining Augustin Hadelich last spring, the College of Charleston Orchestra continues its ambitious artistic path. Conducted by Yuriy Bekker, the College’s orchestra is one of four select orchestras to perform for the exclusive Capital Orchestra Festival at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, in Washington, D.C. In celebration, the CofC orchestra will present a local concert on November 28th, highlighting works that will be presented at the Kennedy Center in February 2023, such as Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture and Hungarian Dance no. 1, in addition to “Charlestonia: A Folk Rhapsody” composed by Charleston’s own Edmund Thornton Jenkins. Hosted by the College’s Department of Music, the concert also will include the first movement of Elgar’s Cello Concerto (student soloist Zachary Butler), and Vivaldi and Manfredini’s Concertos for Two Trumpets (featuring trumpeters Antonio Martí and Matthew Muckey).
The performance will take place at 7:30 pm on Monday, November 28th, 2022 in the Sottile Theatre, 44 George St. Tickets range from $20 to $35 and can be purchased through the George Street Box Office online, by calling (843) 953-4726 or emailing gsbo@cofc.edu. Patrons can find concert info and ticket links at go.cofc.edu/orchestra.
Director of the orchestra, Yuriy Bekker, shares, “The College of Charleston Orchestra keeps growing artistically, and I am so proud of our students. Performing at the Kennedy Center is an amazing opportunity and a milestone for our orchestra. This tour is a great testament to our hardworking students, and I invite Lowcountry patrons to celebrate this wonderful achievement with us, at our Charleston concert.”
