Save the Light Half Marathon and 5K Set for February 4th on Folly Beach

The Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) will partner with Save the Light to host their annual half marathon and 5K, on February 4th, 2023 at Folly Beach.

The race supports the preservation of the Morris Island Lighthouse by Save the Light, a grassroots non-profit organization formed in 2000 to save the lighthouse from being lost to the sea. Both the half marathon and 5K races are USATF-certified and begin and end near the Folly Beach Pier. The half marathon is a run-only event; the 5K is open to runners and walkers. Both races begin at 8 am.

“What better way to further your commitment to health and wellness in 2023 than to traverse the streets of Folly Beach, catching a breeze and ocean views dotted with surfers braving the waves, all while supporting the preservation of the Morris Island Lighthouse,” said CCPRC’s Fitness and Wellness Manager Allison Foster.

Advance registration is required and is open now through January 30th at CharlestonCountyParks.com. Race-day registration will not be available. Fees are $60 for the half marathon and $42 for the 5K.

Following the races, awards will be presented and food will be provided for participants.

“Save the Light is pleased to be teaming up with Charleston County Parks to present the Save the Light Half-Marathon to area runners for the 20th time,” said Save the Light Board Member Richard Beck. “Thanks to all who participate. Your continued support of this race has provided thousands of dollars that allow us to continue our work to preserve this beloved symbol of South Carolina’s maritime past.”

Packet pick-up will be available at The Tides Hotel on Friday, February 3rd from 4 pm to 7 pm, and on race day, Saturday, February 4th, from 6:30 am to 7:30 am. As part of their ongoing partnership, The Tides Hotel will continue to offer group rates for participants who book by January 25th. Guests can contact The Tides Hotel directly at 888-528-0730 for more information, and reference the Save the Light Half Marathon and 5K.

Save the Light, Inc. purchased the Morris Island Lighthouse from its previous owner in 1999, and then transferred ownership to the state of South Carolina through a lease agreement. Save the Light retains responsibility for planning, engineering, fundraising and execution of all aspects of the preservation of the Morris Island Lighthouse.
