Rock and Chappelle are two of the most popular and successful comedians of our time. They’ve also found themselves embroiled in recent controversies.

Rock is widely regarded as one of the greatest standup comics of all time after decades of success and critical acclaim. He is known for the popular stand-up specials like “Bring the Pain,” “Bigger & Blacker,” “Never Scared,” “Kill the Messenger,” and “Chris Rock: Tambourine.” Rock has earned several awards including three Grammys and four Emmys.

In March of 2022, Rock found himself at the center of a controversy when actor Will Smith slapped him on stage during the 94th Annual Academy Awards after Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett-Smith’s appearance. Smith has since apologized to Rock and fans for the incident.

Besides his numerous standup specials, Chappelle is known for creating, writing, and starring in Chappelle’s Show on Comedy Central. He has also appeared in movies like Half Baked, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, The Nutty Professor, Con Airand more. He has won two Emmy Awards, two Grammy Awards, and the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

Chappelle continues to sell-out shows, despite some recent controversies. His recent hosting turn on Saturday Night Live polarized viewers as some enjoyed his commentary during the evening’s monologue, while others said his comments were antisemitic. Over the last two years, he has also drawn criticism for jokes he made about trans people. During a March 2022 performance at the Hollywood Bowl, Chappelle was attacked onstage by a man with a knife who later said he was upset over Chappelle’s past comments.

The comedian is certainly familiar with the Charleston area. He performed four shows at the Charleston Music Hall in February of 2017 and two shows at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center back in December 2013 and 2020. Following the former shows, he spent time at Republic on King Street.

In February 2017, Chappelle was spotted around town with actor Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead). The pair were filming an episode of AMC’s Ride with Norman Reedus which aired in November of that year. In 2020, Chappelle was spotted at the Recovery Room with Bill Murray and Michelle Wolf.
