CCPL Launches New Storytime Format Focused on Whole-Child Development

Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) is kicking off 2023 with a new format for its popular children’s Storytime programs. The new CCPL Storytime will officially launch at a kick-off event at the Bees Ferry West Ashley Library (3035 Sanders Rd) on Tuesday, January 10th at 9:30 am. The event will feature Storytime with Children’s Librarian Katie Jo Daniska, activities, crafts, a meet-and-greet with CCPL’s mascot Owlbert, and more.

Storytime is an interactive reading program crafted to fit the developmental needs of the intended audience and build early literacy skills. At CCPL, they are offered in four age categories: Baby (0-2 years), Toddler (2-3 years), Preschool (3-5 years), and Family (all ages). The new format is designed to not only introduce a love of the library and books, but to develop the whole child – their cognitive, emotional, social, and physical skills – while also supporting parents and caregivers.

“Storytime is a wonderful way to bond with your child and to foster a lifelong love of reading and learning,” said CCPL Children’s System Coordinator Cassie Welch. “We’re thrilled to launch this new format, which is truly an interactive experience for the entire family.”

Research shows that children’s reading success in kindergarten and beyond begins with positive language and literacy experiences from the time they are infants. If children develop pre-reading skills before they start kindergarten, they can focus on learning to read once they begin school. CCPL’s new Storytime programs provide children with numerous opportunities to learn, practice and master these skills, while also helping families to understand the value of interacting with their child(ren) to support development.

CCPL Storytime programs are offered in the morning hours at multiple libraries across the county. For a full schedule of programs, as well as more information on CCPL’s Storytime format, visit ccpl.org/storytime or contact your local library branch.
