34 West to Kick Off 9th Season with ’80s Musical-Comedy

34 West Theater’s 9th season downtown begins on January 27th with the ‘80s musical-comedy Can’t Buy Me Love, written by actors-owners Jeff Querin and Stephen Wayne.

“It’s inspired by the movies Working Girl, Pretty in Pink and Brewster’s Millions,” said Wayne, who is also featured in the comedy.

In order to win an inheritance, a career-driven executive must get married in three days.

“It’s sentimental, outrageous, and filled with those loveable, melodramatic supporting characters we love from ’80’s movies,” Wayne added.

The troupe hosts performances Thursday through Saturday at 8 pm, where audiences can get a local beer or coke float before the show.

“Not gonna lie, half the fun is enjoying a nice glass of wine and M&M’s during the performance,” said Wayne. “Because of the intimacy of our venue, it really is a great date night.”

This year, 34 West will introduce Charleston to three new musical-comedies including, Can’t Buy Me Love running January t0 April, their summer disco-infused musical I’m Still Standing, followed by a return to the 80’s with Time of My Life, inspired by all things John Hughes.

The duo will also introduce a new concert/lecture series, release two short films from their films division, and will continue to present monthly broadcasts of the National Theatre of London productions.
