South Carolina ETV Hosts Screening of “Love in the Time of Fentanyl”
South Carolina ETV and Public Radio (SCETV) will host a free screening of the new documentary film from Independent Lens, Love in the Time of Fentanyl at the Nickelodeon Theatre in Columbia, SC on Jan. 25, from 6 – 8 p.m. This screening is being held in partnership with Challenges Inc., the Lexington/Richland Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council (LRADAC) and WakeUp Carolinas.
The event will consist of an hour-long version of the documentary, which follows a safe injection site in Vancouver, Canada, as staff and volunteers offer hope for a marginalized community and work to destigmatize the overdose crisis.
The screening will be followed by a community discussion, including film participant Ronnie Grigg and representatives from Challenges Inc., LRADAC and University of South Carolina. The discussion will explore the overdose crisis, the community’s response and how the film challenges deeply entrenched beliefs about addiction and people who use drugs. A training session on the use of Narcan, a treatment for known or suspected opioid overdose emergencies, will also be offered following the discussion.
The Love in the Time of Fentanyl screening is part of the 2022-2023 Indie Lens Pop-Up lineup, designed to bring communities together and provide them with a space to watch and discuss timely topics explored in the slate of films seen on Independent Lens— the award-winning PBS documentary anthology series presented by ITVS. Throughout the year, SCETV will host virtual and in-person screenings of other Independent Lens films, such as Storming Caesars Palace and Free Chol Soo Lee. Visit the SCETV website for more information on the Indie Lens Pop-Up events.
The 90-minute documentary, Love in the Time of Fentanyl, will air on Feb. 13 at 10 p.m., on ETVHD and will be available to stream online at pbs.org/explore from Feb. 13 – May 13.
