Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lowcountry Announces its 2023 Bigs of the Year
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lowcountry (BBBSL) announced the recipients of its Big Sister and Big Brother of the Year awards at its 2023 BIG Appreciation celebration. The winners were selected from among more than 200 Big Brothers and Big Sisters participating in the program during the last year.
The award ceremony was held on Thursday, January 26th at Holy City Brewing in North Charleston and was attended by the organization’s Big Brothers and Big Sisters as well as BBBSL committee volunteers, board members, and staff.
“It is a true honor to celebrate Amelia (Lucas) and John (Peters), as our Bigs of the Year,” says Merridith Crowe, President and CEO, BBBSL. “Both Bigs have developed deep relationships with their Littles that have helped these incredible young people to blossom. The bonds Amelia shares with Zoe and John shares with Khalil are prime examples of how mentorship and connection can help a child develop a strong sense of belonging that helps them to navigate life challenges while also discovering their strengths and cultivating dreams for their futures. This is what Big Brothers Big Sisters helps make possible every day. We thank Amelia and John.”
Each year, BBBSL honors two outstanding mentors as its Bigs of the Year. These individuals are nominated by the BBBSL staff to illustrate how mentoring relationships help Littles achieve their biggest possible futures while also leaving a lasting impact on the Big. The winners of BBBSL’s Big of the Year award will be submitted for consideration for the national Big of the Year award announced in June 2023 at the federation’s national conference.
