Press Release

Charleston County Public Works is moving forward with two of the three intersections in the Savannah Highway Capacity and Intersection Improvements Project in West Ashley based on public feedback received last summer.

The next steps include improvements at the Savannah Highway at Dupont Road/ Stinson Drive intersection and the Savannah Highway at Wappoo Road Intersection. On Dupont Road, proposed improvements include adding a left turn lane, realigning Dupont Road with Stinson Drive, adding new sidewalk along Dupont Road, and installing marked crosswalks at all four crossings at Savannah Highway.

Proposed Improvements on Wappoo Road include adding a right turn lane on Wappoo Road southbound, a new 8-foot sidewalk connecting the West Ashley Greenway to the West Ashley Bikeway and installing marked crosswalks at all four crossings at Savannah Highway. Residents will start seeing surveyors at these intersections this month and next. The project team anticipates the design process to be completed this year and to break ground on these intersections in 2024.

A summary of the comments received during the public comment period can be found at https://www.savannahhighway.com/publicmeetingsummary.

The Savannah Highway Capacity and Intersection Improvement Project’s purpose is to improve safety, traffic flow, and pedestrian access at key intersections along the corridor. The project is funded by the 2016 Half-Cent Sales Tax.
