New Greenwood Public Charter School Hires School Leader

Greenwood, S.C. – Adding to its growing team of dynamic educators, Greenwood Charter Academy is pleased to announce local Greenwood resident, Jason Morrison (right), is joining the new school as its founding school director. 

Opening in July 2023, Greenwood Charter Academy will be the first ever public charter school in Greenwood County. The school will serve grades K-6 with a capacity of approximately 100 students per grade. Greenwood Charter Academy will add 7th and 8th grades in the upcoming two school years. GCA plans to provide a high quality, tuition-free, public school option to all students in the greater Greenwood area. Students outside of Greenwood County are eligible for enrollment on a first come first served basis. 

Jason Morrison is a well-respected educator with 18 years of experience in the classroom, as well as five years of experience as an administrator within the South Carolina public school system. Most recently, Mr. Morrison served as the principal at Ware Shoals Primary School from 2019 to 2023. Under his leadership, the school doubled their overall school report card rating and is now outperforming the local school district in SCPASS Science and Social Studies scores, as well as SC Ready math scores. 

Mr. Morrison has a strong track record for school improvement and building a dynamic school culture. Morrison will be joining Greenwood Charter Academy with a focus on building a strong foundation for the new school. Mr. Morrison is excited about the opportunity to make an impact in the community in which he calls home.

Mr. Morrison recently stated, “From my first day in the classroom as a social studies teacher, I knew this profession was my calling in life. I love everything about education. I love working with young people and alongside my educator colleagues as we remain focused on making a positive difference. It is this inspiration that leaves me with a wonderful sense of hope in the future of our community and our great nation. I am inspired and honored to be in a position to serve as the founding school leader at this new school, Greenwood Charter Academy, and I look forward to the positive impact we will make in this community for years to come.” 

The Greenwood Charter Academy Board Chair, Brittany Burwell, shared her enthusiasm in the hire of Mr. Morrison. “Jason Morrison has shown his creativity and leadership skills throughout his career in K-12 education. His compassion as a teacher speaks for itself and his leadership

The GCA Board of Director truly made a homerun hire here and we have full confidence Mr. Morrison will build a strong foundation for GCA for many years to come.”
