Reps. John King and Wendell Gilliard Release Statement on Nikki Haley’s Presidential Campaign Launch
As Nikki Haley is set to celebrate her presidential campaign today in Charleston, State Representatives John King (D-York) and Wendell Gilliard (D-Charleston) released the following statement:
“On the first day of her presidential campaign, Nikki Haley chose to spread lies and take credit for something she had nothing to do with. The Confederate flag coming down from the State House grounds only happened because nine Black churchgoers – one of whom was a state senator – were murdered at Emanuel AME church by a white supremacist. Only then, when taking the flag down had widespread, overwhelming support, did Nikki Haley conveniently feel the need to change her tune. We were working hard negotiating to bring down the flag while she was nowhere to be found. For her to now claim responsibility for taking the flag down is disgusting, offensive and a complete rewrite of history. It’s made even more revolting by the fact that Haley once vocally supported the flag, insisting that it’s not a racist symbol and represents her ‘heritage.’ If this is a sign of what’s to come, her campaign will be one that glosses over history and lies to the American people without shame.”
