The Refinery Receives New Construction Carolopolis Award
The Refinery today announced that they were the recipient of this year’s New Construction Carolopolis Award presented by The Preservation Society of Charleston. Located on Charleston’s upper peninsula at 1640 Meeting Street, The Refinery stands where Standard Oil once operated their refinery, and has incorporated renovated historic structures, urban installations, and reclaimed resources to create a hub of work and play.
In addition to office space, The Refinery includes 4,000 square feet of restaurant space and over 8,000 square feet of retail space, plus a pedestrian plaza, outdoor amphitheater, and rooftop terrace. The brick masonry and aluminum exterior of the building draw inspiration from its history and surroundings, featuring factory windows and a repurposed rail car that serves as a greenroom for amphitheater performers.
The Flyway Companies, the real estate development and construction group behind The Refinery, focus their work on adaptive reuse projects across the Southeast with developments in Nashville, Savannah, and the Lowcountry. They say they pride themselves on “honoring an authentic sense of place, innovative design, sustainable building practices and sound investing.”
This recognition is Flyway CEO and Owner Lindsay Nevin’s 12th Carolopolis Award.
“We’re honored to receive this award from The Preservation Society – an organization we deeply admire,” said Nevin. “The Refinery is a project that perfectly portrays Flyway’s mission to breathe life into once overlooked environments while respecting the history of the landscape.”
