Fight the Bite: Charleston County Mosquito Control Launches Awareness Campaign
Charleston County Mosquito Control employees are going door-to-door to inform residents about mosquitoes and how to help control them around their property. Staff will distribute educational materials and check yards for items that could lead to mosquito breeding.
“Our citizens are the first line of defense in the battle against the mosquito population,” said Charleston County Mosquito Control Manager Brian Hayes. “Mosquitoes carry diseases including West Nile Virus, Dengue Fever, Malaria and the Zika virus. The public must be an integral part of our fight against mosquito-borne diseases. Often, we find that people are breeding mosquitoes in their own yard.”
Tips to fight the bite:
- Empty all containers that hold water. That includes toys, planters, boat covers, and buckets.
- Flush water out of bird baths and pet dishes every three to four days.
- Keep gutters cleaned of leaves and branches.
- Put a window screen over rain-collecting barrels.
This week Charleston County Mosquito Control staff will be in White House Plantation on James Island, Maybank Village, and the Arbors in St. Johns Woods on Johns Island. Next week staff will be in Ashley Hall Plantation in West Ashley, Waverly in Mt. Pleasant, and Wagener Terrace downtown.
