Press Release

Explore your wild side on the scenic nature trails of Caw Caw Interpretive Center when the Charleston County Parks hosts the annual Where the Wild Things Run 5K run and walk on Saturday, March 4th. Registration is now open.

Adults and kids alike are encouraged to take advantage of family-friendly yoga throughout the morning and readings from Maurice Sendak’s book, Where the Wild Things Are. After the race, stick around for the awards ceremony with food and beverages.

The race begins at 8:30 am on Saturday, March 4th. The 5K run and walk is for ages 10 and up; ages 10-15 will need to be accompanied by an adult chaperone. The race fee is $38, and registration ends Monday, February 27th. Early registration is encouraged as the race is expected to sell out. There will not be on-site or race day registration available. Register now at CharlestonCountyParks.com.

Where the Wild Things Run will also be the first race in Charleston County Parks’ 2023 5K trail race series. The series includes Where the Wild Things Run, Mullet Haul 5K Run/Walk, Lowcountry Trail 5K Run/Walk, and Chili 5K Run/Walk. The trail race series is open to all fitness levels and abilities.

“The series encourages more individuals and families to explore the outdoors in our 5K trail races offered throughout the year with package discounts and awards for qualifying series participants,” said Foster. For details or to sign up for the trail race series, visit CharlestonCountyParks.com.

To help preserve and protect the natural resources and interpretive trails, dogs and bicycles are not allowed at Caw Caw. Please be aware that the course offers occasional areas of uneven terrain and varies from hard-packed trails with roots to grass and boardwalks. Strollers are not recommended during Where the Wild Things Run. Water stations will be available on the course, but pre-filled, personal water bottles are highly recommended.

Caw Caw Interpretive Center is a 654-acre site in Ravenel that is rich in natural, cultural and historical resources. It contains areas managed for wildlife including waterfowl, songbirds, otters, deer and more, as well as favored habitats for rare wildlife such as American Alligators, Swallow-tailed Kites, Bald Eagles and others. The scenic park features more than seven miles of trails with trailside exhibits, elevated boardwalks through wetlands, historic rice fields, remnants of a former tea farm, and wildlife habitats.
