Allison Smith, the founder and owner of Glazed Gourmet Doughnuts, the popular King Street bakery, died in a car accident. According to the Charleston County Coroners Office, Smith, 34, on Thursday succumbed from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle collision off of Dorchester Road at I-26.

The office said Smith was struck by another vehicle. Sacha Hampton, a 24-year-old male, was the unrestrained passenger in the vehicle that struck Smith’s vehicle. He also died from injuries sustained in the collision. The North Charleston Police Department is the investigating police agency.

In 2011, Smith and her husband, Mark, opened Glazed Gourmet Doughnuts at 481 King Street. It quickly became a popular destination of locals and visitors a like. The shop went on to earn accolades from Zagat, Thrillist, USA Today, and more.

In social media posts – and a sign on the shop’s door – Glazed announced that they will be closed until further notice.
