Gibbes Museum of Art to Partner with World-Renowned Digital Artist During Art Charleston
The Gibbes Museum of Art is pleased to announce an evening of digital art, cocktails and light fare with world-famous digital artist Mike Winkelmann, known as Beeple, during Art Charleston on April 29th. Art Charleston is returning from April 26th to 30th, enhancing the cultural landscape through special programs and events that highlight Charleston’s strong and diverse human stories through the visual arts. Art Charleston and Beeple Studios will highlight the growing and cutting-edge sector of the visual art world that is NFTs and digital arts, pushing the boundaries of what art is and who is classified as an artist. A limited number of tickets will be available.
“Art Charleston is meant to inspire and challenge the community to imagine, question, explore and recognize how art pushes the boundaries for all that is possible,” says Angela Mack, executive director of the Gibbes Museum of Art. “This event will give guests an immersive experience with a groundbreaking medium expanding the art world, happening right here in Charleston with Beeple’s digital art exhibition space.”
Winkelmann has created a picture every day, from start to finish, and posted it online for fifteen years without missing a single day, now referred to as his “Everydays.” Beeple’s Everydays, beginning May 1, 2007, often use references to politicians, pop-cultural icons and the like to satirize current world events and create interpretations of modern politics and culture. In 2021, he sold “Everydays: The First 5000 Days” at the revered British auction house, Christies, for $69 million. Since then, he has continued his digital Everydays and reimagined the way digital art is displayed by opening his new 50,000 sq. foot studio in Charleston, complete with a gallery and an experiential space.
In addition to the Art Charleston & Beeple Studios event, Art Charleston is anchored by Art of Design, Gibbes on the Street, Beverly McIver in Conversation, Live at the Gibbes and the Artisan Fair.
