The City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs presents the 2023 Piccolo Spoleto Juried Art Exhibition, on view from March 17 to May 7, 2023. This annual juried art exhibition highlights the recent work of artists across South Carolina featuring painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking and photography. Artworks receiving prizes are presented alongside a limited selection of pieces identified as meriting display by this year’s juror, Harriett Green.

About the Juror:

Harriett Green is a former visual arts director of the South Carolina Arts Commission. She received her B.A. degree in art history from the University of South Carolina in Columbia in 1980. From 1980 to 1988, she was the registrar and assistant curator (1988) at the Columbia Museum of Art. As former assistant curator of the Columbia Museum of Art and as the Visual Arts Director from 1993 to 2021 of the South Carolina Arts Commission, Ms. Green has curated or co-curated exhibitions in South Carolina and New York City. She also served as the curator of the South Carolina Arts Commission State Art Collection.

Ms. Green has served as project director for collaborative efforts with other state arts agencies such as Craft of the Carolinas with the North Carolina Arts Council (1993) as well as the S.C. Arts Commission Visual Arts & Craft Fellows exhibition in (2017 to 2018). Ms. Green is a former board member of the Alternative Museum in New York City and has served on the Charlotte Area Transit System’s (CATS) Art-in-Transit program as a member of the Oversight Committee, the selection panel for the North Carolina Freedom Monument project; fellowship panels for the Kentucky Arts Council and the Idaho Commission on the Arts. She is a former member of the Board of Trustees of Penland School of Crafts, the Artists Selection Committee for CATS Art in Transit project and the Windgate Fellowship panel.

She was appointed to the National Register of Peer Professionals by the General Services Administration in Washington, DC for its Art – in- Architecture Program serving on selections panels for federal courthouse projects in Columbia, SC, Jacksonville, FL, Greenville, SC, Charleston, SC as well as the CDC in Atlanta, GA. Green served on the Crafts Emergency Relief Fund (CERF) Arts Emergency Relief Grants Panel, South Arts’ Suffrage Mural Project Selection Committee, City Gallery at Waterfront Park in Charleston, SC and currently 701 Center for Contemporary Art in Columbia Advisory Committees. She is a member of the board of trustees for the Columbia Music Festival Association, American Craft Council and Central Carolina Community Foundation. Green is currently an independent art consultant.
