CofC Dean’s Album Debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Classical Chart
Under an Indigo Sky composed by Edward Hart, dean of the school of the arts at the College of Charleston, recently debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Traditional Classical Albums Chart. Released on March 3, 2023, the album features critically acclaimed violinist Yuriy Bekker, conductor of the College of Charleston orchestra, and includes A Charleston Concerto and Under an Indigo Sky, two concertos that celebrate and reflect the history and culture of the Southeastern United States.
Hart has never received recognition on the Billboard Chart and says, “It’s a privilege to be able to share with the world the great talent of our Charleston Symphony performing works that are inspired by our region.”
A native of Charleston, South Carolina, Hart finds inspiration in the natural beauty and multicultural heritage of his hometown. Hart specifically wrote A Charleston Concerto to commemorate the 350th Anniversary of the City of Charleston and the recording features a collaboration with the Charleston Symphony and the world-renowned Harlem Quartet. The composition takes an unflinching, yet ultimately hopeful view of the city’s complex history over those three and a half centuries.
Under an Indigo Sky is a musical love letter written to Hart’s geographical home. It explores both the physical splendor of the mountains and coast, but also the feel and “soul” of these breathtaking places.
“The charting of Under an Indigo Sky is truly the result of a fantastic group effort,” says Hart. “From the generous sponsors to the dedicated CSO staff, leadership and board, to Navona Records and 8VA Consultancy, and of course the talented musicians of our wonderful orchestra, I could not be more honored and humbled to be in partnership with this incredible team.”
