Press Release

Charleston Stage is proud to celebrate the company’s 45th anniversary and retirement of Founder and Producing Artistic Director, Julian Wiles, with a dazzling philanthropic event at the Historic Dock Street Theatre and Gibbes Museum of Art. Join Charleston Stage for a cocktail reception at the Historic Dock Street Theatre, a tribute performance which will highlight the past 45 years of Wiles’ work, followed by a seated, three-course dinner in the garden at the Gibbes Museum of Art. Proceeds will help expand access, inclusion and education, as well as introduce new scenic and lighting technologies that will light up the Dock Street Theatre stage in exciting, new ways.

Playwright, director, designer and educator Julian Wiles founded Charleston Stage in 1978, which became the resident company of the Historic Dock Street Theatre, America’s first theatre. Under Wiles’s leadership, Charleston Stage has become one of the region’s largest and most respected arts institutions and includes an extensive education program reaching over 25,000 young people annually. Wiles has designed, directed and produced over 300 plays and musicals for Charleston Stage. He has written 34 original plays, musicals, and stage adaptations, eight of which are published. Many such as The Seat of Justice and Gershwin at Folly celebrate the Lowcountry’s rich cultural heritage and history. Musical and monologue highlights from his original works and Charleston Stage’s most memorable productions will be performed in the theatre following the cocktail reception in the courtyard.

The 45th Anniversary Celebration’s proceeds will benefit the Wiles Fund for the Future, helping to secure Charleston Stage’s next 45 years as the largest performing arts organization in South Carolina. Funds will be used to increase theatre access with regular sign language-interpreted performances for the hearing impaired and audio-described performances for the blind, expand Charleston Stage’s arts education programs across the Lowcountry at no cost to families and schools in need, and invest in state-of-the-art production technology to brighten and elevate performances at the Dock Street Theatre.

The 45th Anniversary Celebration is Wednesday, April 19th at 6 pm at the Historic Dock Street Theatre and the Gibbes Museum of Art. Ticket sales are available online at CharlestonStage.com/Benefit, with pricing at $500 per Patron, $250 per Young Patron (under age 40), and $125 for a cocktail reception and performance ticket only. This event is cocktail attire.
